What is the American Sheep Shearer Development Partnership?

ASSDP is a three year training program to develop professional American sheep shearers by providing advanced schools and in field training in  the US  and Australia.

When does the program start?

The program starts with shearing schools in the US, usually held in Nov.-Feb. Check our Events page for the next scheduled school.

Who can apply to enroll in the program?

Any American between the ages of 18 and 30 can apply.

What in field experience can I expect in the US?

After attending the ASSDP school, you will be placed for the American shearing season (Usually February to mid May) with a professional crew  to shear sheep in the western US. 

What tools and equipment are recommended to have?

It is recommended that students have a minimum of a hand-piece, 15 combs, 50 cutters and a pendulum to start. For any specific questions regarding tools and equipment please contact the program administrator.

How long will I be in Australia?

You will be in Australia at least 90 days, to attend educational opportunities and work on Australian Shearing Crews.

Where in the US will I travel?

You will be training with and working in the western United States, mainly MT, WY, ID, ND, and CO.

Where will I travel in Australia?

In Australia you will be primarily in New South Wales, with opportunity to go to Victoria or other provinces. 

How much can I make Shearing?

Shearing is paid on a per head basis, skilled shearers can easily make six figures. 

What will I gain by participating in this program?

The skills, experience and connections to shear anywhere in the world and make exponential income in a vital trade.
